  • Hama Hama Oyster Rama!!

2 years ago Won bought us a Groupon for oyster picking from the sea!! Of course with all sea creature picking you have to go during the hours of low tide during the times of year where the water temperature is just right so your food does not poison you. Long story short, we never timed it right to go. Until...

Hama Hama Oyster Rama 2013!! Oyster picking, food, music, relay races, art, and FUN!!

Hama Hama! Don't bother getting dressed cute in Washington because it's always so FREEZING COLD!
I'm walking on oysters. Oh! oh! And don't it feel good!

    ALL MINE!!!
So many little creatures to play with! From slimey little fishes to star fishes to hermit crabs and big crabs and a who knows what else lives in these waters!

Hard at work picking the biggest oysters we could find!

Good thing we had rain boots! We could walk in the puddles. Except she got a hole in her boot! And everyone else got their socks wet from wearing tennis shoes :(

We had the biggest and heaviest bucket! Everyone complimented us on our haul! I helped!

Photo op is over, Won Choe carries the bucket home. Hahahahahaha.
We could have also digged for clams. But we skipped out on that experience because there was nothing special about the clams and it was $5/lb! Hello, they are only $3.99/lb at the Asian market and $2.89 at Winco. We DID buy some fresh steamed clams at the picnic though :)
Oysters on the other hand were cheap at $5/dozen! Our goal was 6 dozen (as it was 2 dz/person) but we were tired and hungry at 4 dozens so we stopped. Plus the tide was coming up and the wind was getting really strong.
Washing our oysters to be packed to be taken home. Free tip: No matter how fabulous your hair is, tie it up for outdoor activities! Lest you risk looking like crazy hair in strong wind!

I specifically also picked a few of the smallest oysters I could find to eat raw!! YUUUMMMM!!

At home for a nice wash before we baked them! After scrubbing them thoroughly, I found tons of little shrimps left floating in the sink. Ha!

I wasn't kidding when I said we picked the biggest ones we could find!!

For some reason I thought watermelon would go well with them. And it did!!

The oysters were as big as my chubby little hand (no thanks to Won's bad camera angle skills)! But as fun as it was to pick and bake the biggest ones (no it was not, these took almost an hour to cook!) I prefer the smaller ones. Next time I will not be so greedy :(
And THAT is how I spent my weekend! Next up.. Digging for razor clams!!!!

  • *drools*

FYI, when the shells open, they are done cooking. One hour is WAAAY too long.

  • FYI it took as long as one hour for the shells to open

  • My mom just went clam and geoduck digging last weekend. She had a lot of fun. I'll take you when I'm back for a weekend next time if it's clam season. It's on my family's private beach. No permits needed and we can hang out at the beach house for the weekend!! :)

  • @mr_jin_tonic -  Normally , yes but with these, After an hour they still werent open so we were like wtf.. so we pried them open to help them a bit. They were still a little raw. haha When we tried to open them raw, they wouldnt even budge! Lol These were very strange oysters, much much bigger than we've ever dealt with. We didnt get to eat until midnight! LOL!!

  • @JL789 -  WTF!! How are you the coolest person living in WA?!? Move back already!!! Hahhahahaha <3

  • Lol, maybe something was wrong with what you were cooking on? I can roast a whole chicken in 1 hour.

  • im totally going to do this if i ever go to WA

  • @mr_jin_tonic -  Oven at 350.. then 400. Okay to be fair we weren't really sure why some of the lights were blinking and some were on and some were off. Hahahaha. Don't judge. Hahahaha
@therealhobos -  HIGHLY recommend it. I used to go oyster farming in CA but that just meant buying pre-picked oysters at the "farm." This was a new experience for us :)
