  • Oh Great Lemon!

After some wonderful xangans left comments on how to fix my ant problem, I decided to do it RIGHT AWAY!

So apparently ant colonies have these scout ants who go exploring first and they don't like the smell of lemons! Yay! Organic and safe resolution! I was so happy because I hated spraying Raid in the kitchen.

Anyhow, I felt kinda silly doing it. Kind of shamanist. I rolled a lemon and cut it up and squeezed the juice. Mixed a bit of water and rubbed that over all kitchen counter tops, tables, and around the rims of all the trashcans & compost bins. I felt like I was blessing the damn place. Then I shaved up the lemon peel into small chunks and spread it all over the kitchen while announcing, "Nobody move these okay! It's not trash! It's to rid of the ants."

Then I did a lemon dance and prayed the ants away. Okay, fine so I didn't do that part but I felt like I should have.

I don't particularly like the smell of lemon but I choose lemon over ants any day!

I'll report back on how it turns out! :D   But very excited right now!

  • When the ants are given lemons, they make lemonade!

  • Another way to deal with ants and fleas is another natural method, diatomaceous earth. It is not toxic to anyhing. For insects with segments or shells it is like ground glass. It either cuts them up or it props apart their shell segments and the dehydrate to death. It is so fine that it has no such effect on your skin. Spread it around outside the house with a little squeeze bottle and inside the house in places where the bugs are coming in. reat your lawn with it and no more fleas. It is not instant but it is very long lasting. You can us it as flea powder on pets and there is no next season immunity to it in the fleas. It is cheap. Get agricultural grade, not pool filter grade. Just search the term on line. Check out several sources. 10 pounds will last you for years.

  • Just get an ant eater....DUH

  • @cafengocmy -  I remember learning about this in high school environmental science. Great on cockroaches! That's what we used when we had a cockroach problem when we first moved in. Haven't seen one since! But our house is old and so I guess the sealing on the walls and windows allow the ants in.

  • Find the cracks and holes and dust those areas with DE. The stuff works on ants, too. I used it for fleas in my yard years ago and have not had them or roaches in a decade. I tried vinegar and I tried lemon and even bleach for an invasion of ants and it just made them faster. Then I remembered I still had some DE and put it down. A day later there were no ants. Do wear a dust mask. AND you can mix a wee bit into that bag of rice and it keeps it weevil free. And I proofread my comment this time.

  • I hope they all go away soon! :(

  • always entertaining to read your blog. =D
